For most of the year, giant boulder corals such as star corals and brain corals remain static, almost like colorful rocks. But come September, these corals spring to life in a mesmerizing display of nature.

"Our dives aren't just about showcasing the known but introducing the new and incredible. Every diver should, at least once in their lifetime, experience a coral spawning night dive," says Steve Broadbelt, co-owner of Ocean Frontiers. It's not just an event; it's an ethereal bucket list experience, especially for photography enthusiasts.

Delving Deeper into the Spawning Event

So, what exactly is coral spawning, and how did we at Ocean Frontiers become experts at tracking it? The journey began with a deep interest in coral spawning after reading an article about the Texas Flower Garden Banks' discoveries. After many trials, tribulations, and years of observations, our team, including our good friend Alex Mustard, decoded the ideal timing for coral spawning in the Cayman Islands.

The event is intricately connected with the lunar cycle, precisely revolving around the full moon and a set number of nights and hours after sunset. The meticulous research and dedication to understanding the phenomenon mean that we can offer this experience to our divers with confidence. "It requires immense patience, but the wait is worth every magical moment underwater," shared a team member.

The Coral Symphony

Join us on this nocturnal adventure, where you'll see a remarkable display unlike any other. While most night dives occur shortly after sunset, coral spawning dives venture out much later, around 10 PM, immersing divers deep into the night's heart.

"Imagine staring at a coral, and suddenly, it starts to bloom, and before you know it, multiple corals are displaying their magnificent spawning simultaneously," says another instructor. The experience is packed with 60 minutes of intense marine action, leaving divers in awe.
