Fish Identification

With thousands of different species in the ocean, it can be a challenge to tell one from another. This program explores the biology and behavior of the ocean's diverse fish populations, from the brightly colored butterflyfish of the Caribbean to the robust triggerfish of the Red Sea. This course is your chance to learn what makes a fish a fish, how they are classified, and how to identify various species in different regions of the world.

By participating in the Fish Identification program, you will gain the knowledge and skills to properly identify fish species and contribute to their conservation. You'll understand the critical role different fish play in the health of the marine environment and how you can participate in worthwhile scientific initiatives through citizen science

What you will learn

  • The key methods used to classify and name fish species.
  • How to identify fish down to the family level using key morphological characteristics, including body shape, markings, and tail shape.
  • The fascinating behaviors of reef fish and how they contribute to identification.
  • How to identify common fish families found in the Caribbean, Indo-Pacific, and Red Sea.
  • The geological events that led to the different fish species found in the Caribbean versus the Indo-Pacific. 
  • How recreational divers can contribute to citizen science programs that monitor coral reef communities.

Prerequisites

  • Available for ages 6+
  • No scuba certification necessary

The online course content for the Fish Identification Speciality should take a student between 3 and 6 hours to complete. This can be done on a desktop or mobile device.
