Coral Identification
For centuries, corals were thought to be simple plants or colorful rock formations. We now know they are living animals that build the largest structures on Earth. This program explores the biology and behavior of these amazing organisms, from the individual coral polyp to the vast, complex reef ecosystems they create. This course is your chance to learn what a coral is, how to identify different species, and understand their critical role in the health of our ocean.
By participating in the Coral Identification program, you will gain the knowledge and skills to recognize corals and appreciate their diversity. You will understand their ecological importance, the threats they face, and how you can become a steward for our planet's vital reef ecosystems.

FAQ
No. This speciality is a dry course meaning there are no required training dives and therefore is open to snorkelers to join.
Yes, we manage two coral nurseries on the East End of Grand Cayman. Unfortunately, in September 2022, the Cayman Islands experienced unusually high water temperatures—reaching 91°F from the surface down to 100 feet—for a continuous six-week period. This extreme heat had a serious impact on the health of our coral nurseries, and all surviving corals were transferred to the Department of Environment for further care.
We have a vast range of corals living on our dive sites from towering hard corals, to temperature resilient soft corals, and deep water branching black corals.
The online course content for the Coral Identification Speciality should take a student between 3 and 6 hours to complete. This can be done on a desktop or mobile device.
