Despite its unassuming location — right offshore from the public playing fields in the village of East End, next to one of the most popular bars in the area — Playing Fields packs a big punch. Three freestanding coral heads are the most apparent feature, located right under the boat in a row heading south. Divers can do an extended figure-eight circuit around each of them. The nearest ones sit just feet from each other, creating a fun channel to swim through, while the rubble-strewn bottom is ideal habitat for well-camouflaged Yellow Stingrays that can be tough to spot — look for a round indentation in the sand with giveaway eyes and tail.
Playing Fields is known for its Star Coral formations and is one of the best sites during the coral spawning nights each fall, when these corals procreate spectacularly — spaces sell out quickly. The site is also an active outplanting location where nursery corals are relocated from the East End lagoon to grow on the reef. For a fishy safety stop, the reef top north of the pin yields profuse schools of Bermuda Chubb, Bar Jacks, Horse-eyed Jacks, and Creole Wrasse — three-minute stops often stretch to ten as divers hover mid-water watching the circling fish.
