Not 1000 yards from the Ocean Frontiers dock, an undersea webcam is broadcasting a little bit of Cayman reef magic all over the world.
The webcam is live, and you can get in on the action by clicking here.
You can watch blue tangs jostle for space at a busy cleaning station as gobies race from fish to fish. Eagle rays fly by on a regular basis. More recently a nurse shark put in an appearance.
Not only is the webcam crazy cool, the story behind it is as well. The cam is a project of Teens 4 Oceans, a group dedicated to inspiring and engaging a new generations of ocean stewards and conservation leaders by teaching Marine Science to High School Kids.
The camera sits in about 6 feet of water, just inside the sound. A moored platform is tethered to the camera as it shoots a signal from a HD-1 underwater camera system back to an antenna on the dive shop. The video data is processed, encoded and beamed up over the internet with a dedicated pipe provided by Digicel Cayman and into your living room.
There’s nothing quite like being in the water yourself. But for those long intervals between trips, the cam provides a welcome taste of Cayman diving to enjoy with your morning coffee.
As eagle ray and other appearances become more predictable, we’ll post advice on the best times to watch out for guest appearances. Because the cam is real- time, viewing is limited to daytime hours only. We’re exploring the possibility of adding lights some time soon.
