Why Kangaroo? Because this was the favorite dive site of an Australian divemaster who worked for a small dive shop called East End Explorers in the 1980s — and his legend lives on in the site's name. Intrepid divers begin by dropping through an incredible swim-through: the eponymous gorge. It sits a little deeper than most of the regular tunnels on East End, but those who prefer can always go over the top instead. Thanks to occasional current, the visibility and marine life are spectacular, and the coral coverage is among the most commented-upon features of any East End site — every square foot seems to overflow with healthy coral and sponges.
Divers using Nitrox will really get their money's worth here. Sand patches around 70 feet deep offer a good chance of seeing Spotted Eagle Rays feeding on buried crustaceans — look for telltale clouds of displaced sand as a sign that a spotty someone is hunting for breakfast. The combination of dramatic swim-through entry, spectacular coral coverage, and big marine life encounters makes Kangaroo Gorge one of the most complete dives in the High Rock zone. You will be hopping to come back again soon.
