On the windswept southeast corner of Grand Cayman, Grouper Grotto is another perfect example of the intricate nature of East End's exposed shallow dives. The site falls within a protected Grouper spawning zone, and divers can expect sightings of Coneys, Graysbies, Nassau Groupers, Black Groupers, and Tiger Groupers. With luck, the extremely shy Goliath Grouper may also appear — their vast size creates a startling encounter when met face-to-face in a narrow space.
A network of steep and narrow rocky passages connects with low-ceilinged tunnels throughout the site, with tons of life sheltering within the recesses. The deeper areas to the south offer wide fields of soft corals, sponges, and the chance of larger critters such as sharks, turtles, and Eagle Rays. Like other sites in this area, Grouper Grotto comes alive in summer when large schools of Silversides congregate in the canyons, creating spectacular curtains of silver that part as you pass through and close again behind you.
