Dumbo is an elephant sculpture placed on the reef by some disgruntled Cayman Islands Dive Lodge employees who, on quitting in style, kidnapped their manager's beloved statue and took it diving. They filmed themselves chaining and padlocking Dumbo to the reef, dropped the key into the abyss, and sent the video along with their letters of resignation. The chain has long since rusted away, leaving Dumbo on his perch — overgrown with algae and coral — to survey his domain for eternity at around 80 feet. He can be tricky to spot, so keep your eyes peeled when you reach the ledge.
The pin sits on the bottom of the sloped miniwall, with Dumbo's perch and the main wall just a short swim south. Beyond the elephant-watching, the site also features multiple ledges that provide a tremendous horizontal contrast to the steep drop-off, offering little refuges for Surgeonfish, Butterflyfish, and Damselfish. Dumbo's Drop-Off is one of those sites that always raises a smile, combining a great story with genuinely excellent diving.
