Named for its remarkable abundance of Giant Barrel Sponges, this site stands out with 17 giant examples over 15 years old. These sponges are the true stars of the dive — watch them closely and you can see them actively filtering the water and venting it through their natural chimneys. Barrel sponges are more predominant on the north-facing sites, and nowhere is this more evident than here. Remember: climbing into the sponges is not allowed, no matter how tempting.
The site has tall, sloped buttresses running down toward the drop-off along a sloping sand bottom, allowing divers to make their way up and around these vast features while taking in the incredible marine life. The water clarity on this stretch of wall is second to none — it is worth pausing from time to time to simply hover mid-water and take in the scene. Watching other divers floating in the far distance against a backdrop of terrain fading into the blue gives a humbling and mesmerizing sense of scale.
